the real me

i stop at red lights and 4 am in the morning
look both ways and heed my mother’s warnings
a smile for a stranger – forgiveness for a friend
follow the golden rule – right up till the end

from a distance you can see my front
know it’s more than some weak stunt
you’ll believe i am humble
just spend my time – you’ll hear a rumble

see my cool exterior
is a skin i shed at night
there’s a monster in your midst
that i keep hidden out of sight
i will never let him show
for fear you’d come to know
the real me

i’ve never hit a man with glasses
even with my fists though some have asked it
never been caught red-handed (more than once or twice)
i’m willing to help if you ask really nice

all American guy – family values and pie
real man, tough, sensitive,don’t cry
willing to admit – i can’t approach perfection
if only to attract affection

that way

i guess we have to talk
there’s no where left to walk
we have too much to discuss

i’m on the battlefield
and i’ve lowered my shield
will you wait till i trust (to swing your sword)

yeah the rumors are true
i’ve feelings for you
now what will you say?

it’s foreign to me
so i guess i can see
how you don’t think of my that way

now i’m weak in the knees
i’m prepared to say please
if the answer is no i’ll move on somehow

you can laugh if you will
but i’m serious still
all my dreams are awakened now

yeah the rumors are true
i have fallen for you
now what will you say?

i’m new to this and
i will understand
if you don’t think of me that way

will you say, “i love you”
will you ask if i’m through
it comes as shock to me too
but the rumors are true
i’ve feelings for you

tears from cloudy skies

i bury what i want to say
deep under my breath
and i watch the clock just like
i’m marking time of death

but the rains are washing way
the layers of my lies
erosion to emotion
tears from cloudy skies

and i say ‘i’m sorry’ – you’ve heard it before
and i say ‘it’s over’ – you know there’ll be more
still you let me in from the storm

i apologize for what i’ve done
and what i soon will do
i can’t see what’s best for me
sometimes i hide fromĀ  you

the wind will bring me back
all creation tells me, “stay!”
the sky ignites in blue
warning me, “don’t run away”

and i say ‘i’m sorry’ – you’ve heard it before
and i say ‘it’s over’ – you know there’ll be more
still you let me in from the storm

this is the peace i wanted
this is the feeling i’ve found
heart poured from love
with a sky up above – a blue sky

raising me from the dead

i’ve walked on the edge and fallen too
i’ve never landed far from You
You pick me up off the ground

i’ve run and hid from Your will
hands over my ears i hear You still
i get lost, but i’m found

i am a child – please teach me how to grow
i am alive – but i act like i don’t know
that you – are raising me from the dead

i’ve sat by the fire denying Your name
i’ve swallowed the truth and hid Your flame

i’ve prayed for things i shouldn’t get
i’ve taken for granted things You haven’t given yet

but when i ask you forgive it all…

i am a child – please teach me how to grow
i am alive – but i act like i don’t know
that you – are raising me from the dead

prodigal’s poker face

sit down to the table
tell y’all my name
be nice to me please
i’m new to the game

ante up – for the priveledge
something – i’m willing to lose
slide the cards to me
i’m ready to choose

but all at once it is so clear
i’m in over my head
betting on shallow
but sinking so deep
and we’re playing for keeps

walk off like a good sport
trying not to cry
my pockets are empty
my well’s run dry

thought i would shock the world
knew i would pay a price
but it’s all over after
one roll of the dice

but now i know – it is so clear
i’m in over my head
betting on shallow, but sinking so deep
we were playing for keeps

trying to win back my pride
tossing my caution aside
i was never meant to be in this town
i left home – i let them down

one and only

i didn’t know her name
when she made me pray
when she waved at me like she
was in a parade

like an angel touching down
she stood out from the crowd
i wanted to follow her home
a girl like that should never be alone

i knew that girl would be
my one and only
i knew that girl would be
my one and only

so i spent my time on her
my investment yielded no return
i tore her picture from my wall
but i found no flame to burn

then she saw me standing there
guess she noticed my stare
then she spoke the words that made all right
do you think we could go out tonight?

so i treated her like royalty
and she up and left the throne
i, the jester, executed
with, “can’t you just leave me alone?”

my friends say there’s always more
lie about the line outside the door
they speak of fish in a big blue sea
but i know that’s not for me

Oh she will always be
my one and only.

no more west

hitch up the wagons
we’re headed west
out where i man can meet his test (yeah)

bid farewell
to the house the city
as they say, “it’s such a pity” (yeah)

we’re driving across the land
holding the reigns with both hands
we’re staring into the sunset
but there’s no more west

stop at the shoreline
time to sink or swim
and the dusk is growing dim

we’ve been here before
times were hard, we were soft
but every cliff we came to, we never had to jump off

at dawn we see what we’ve passed
a land of brave and free
and we can’t quite come to believe
this is our destiny

deliverance

I read
You said
I’ll deliver you

I read
You said
I’ll be the one to pull you through
but that was back with Moses
and all those Hebrews
back then they had the plagues
how could they lose

but i could use some of that deliverance now

standing on the shores
of an ocean all my own
when will i ever learn

God please part the waters
I can’t cross over alone
Bridges that i thought you said to burn

time’s gone by
since their cry
but you sent your son to save
this ocean won’t part
but you’re here in my heart
and i’m standing on the waves
i can see how Peter did it
I can’t keep my eyes on you
just when i think i’ve got it
you’re not in my view
but i could use some of that deliverance now

standing on the waves
of an ocean all my own
when will i ever learn

God please part the waters
I can’t cross over alone
Bridges that I thought you said burn

Jesus, My Deliver
See me – in this land
My soul cries for freedom
Only found in your hand

Anyone

i forgot to ask you one thing
but now it’s gone from me
lets just talk some time away
though the words are empty

ok you got me – i’m found out
my excuse was just no good
but hear me out – before you shout
i’m just doing what i should

anyone would call you up
just to hear your voice
anyone would follow you
like they didn’t have a choice
i’m just like all the rest
when all the rest- they find the best

i always thought you knew
anyone would fall in love with you

where do we go from here
lets leave it all unspoken
you won’t talk and i keep
my heart from being broken

oh – you had to go and look up
with the answer in your eyes
let me share my motive
you look too surprised

anyone would call you up
just to hear your voice
anyone would follow you
like they didn’t have a choice
i’m just like all the rest
when all the rest – they find the best

i always thought you knew
anyone would fall in love with you

sittin’ with an angel

i’m sittin’ with an angel
stood up by my friends
waiting for some signal
here we go again

skip ahead to dinner
anything but a date
i listen for 2 hours
till we agree it’s getting late

don’t you know i prayed for this to happen
now my answers sittin’ here
with all my feelings for her
when it’s real – i only feel
fear.

we pay and leave for home
still can’t believe the truth
i glance at her smile and then
i have my proof

a blessing has been given me
its coming to and end
we say our goodbyes to the night
and leave closer friends

don’t you know i prayed for this to happen
now my answers sittin’ here
with all my feelings for her
when it’s real – i only feel…
fear.
